How will the Hawaii Health Information Exchange Affect Healthcare in Hawaii in 2011 and beyond?

The Hawaii Health Information Exchange (Hawaii HIE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 2006 by leading health care stakeholders in Hawaii for the purpose of improving health care delivery throughout the state through seamless, effective, and safe health information exchange.

Hear Director Christine Sakuda or Project Director Greg Suenaga explain the program and its effects on Healthcare.

Speaker Bios:

Christine Sakuda
Ms. Christine Sakuda is the Executive Director of the Hawaii Health Information Exchange, a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit dedicated to facilitating safe, effective and quality health information exchange throughout the state of Hawaii.  Ms. Sakuda served as the President of the Hawaii Health Information Exchange from 2007-2009, and became the Executive Director in September of 2010.  The Hawaii HIE is the state-designated entity for the federal Department of Health & Human Services, Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT(DHS-ONC), Health Information Exchange program, and is also the recipient of the ONC Regional Extension Center (REC) program for the Hawai'i and the Pacific Territories of Guam, American Samoa and CNMI.

Ms. Sakuda was formerly the Information Officer for the Hawaii Primary Care Association and oversaw its health information technology program working closely with Hawaii's Federally Qualified Community Health Centers to implement telehealth and EHR programs.

Ms. Sakuda serves on the Board of the Hawaii County Beacon Community Consortium and is a member of numerous health IT-related associations.


Greg Suenaga
Greg Suenaga joined the Hawaii Health Information Exchange on July 2010 as Project Director.  His primary responsibilities are gathering public and private consensus on the technical development and direction of the State HIE, facilitating the legal policy requirements necessary for proper agreement of data exchange, monitoring of budget/finances and provided a sound sustainability plan.

Greg has 8 years of health IT background that started as a contractor at the Pacific Telehealth and Technology Hui, a joint venture organization between the VA and DoD. The Hui was formed to explore and enhance technological solutions to improve access, quality, and delivery of healthcare services for veterans, military personnel and dependents and other federal beneficiaries in the Pacific. The Hui transitioned its program under the Joint Information Technology Center - Maui (Pacific JITC) to support DoD and readiness requirements and modernize IT systems.

Greg moved to the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) (tat terick) funded project to develop an open source Electronic health Records program that is continued to be developed by the University of Hawaii- Telecommunications and Information Policy Group..

Prior to joining the Hawaii HIE, Greg completed a joint billing project that processes medical claims between Tripler Army Medical Center and Veterans Administrations. This process channeled millions of dollars of reimbursement claims between to disparate federal agencies.
