AITP August Luncheon – What is Smart Grid Technology and how will Hawaii benefit?

Google the term “smart grid” and you will get millions of responses explaining what a smart grid is and why you want one. They will probably all talk about deploying modern communication technology among the components of the electricity supply network. But the many visions will also vary widely. The smart grid has come to mean something different to everyone. It has become – in some ways – the promised solution to all energy problems. In other words, hype. In this brief overview, we will discuss a few of the energy challenges facing us in Hawaii, and how Hawaiian Electric is planning to use elements of smart grid technology to address some of them. We promise to skip the hype.

Speaker:  Steve McMenamin  VP CIO HECO

Steve McMenamin is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Hawaiian Electric Co. Before joining Hawaiian Electric, he held executive positions at Borland Software Corp., BEA Systems Inc., and Southern California Edison Co. He is co-author of Adrenaline Junkies and Template Zombies (Dorset House, 2008), and Essential Systems Analysis (Prentice-Hall, 1984).

Lunch Buffet Cost:  $25 for members, $30 non-members, $10 students/retirees/unemployed with registration by Monday, Aug 16, 2010 (we now accept credit cards on PayPal online). $35 late or on-site registration (cash/check only).
