Project Management office – Best practices for establishing & maintaining a PMO

Summary:  PMO’s are an integral part of today’s ever changing IT departments.  While the makeup, size and procedures of today’s PMOs vary from company to company, the goal of creating and implementing a methodology to increase the likelihood of project success remains a common theme.  We will explore the goals of PMOs, ways to increase effectiveness and efficiency, potential setbacks as well as share industry experience on PMO’s.

Carey Carpenter, CPA, CISA Deloitte & Touche LLP
Carey Carpenter leads Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Enterprise Risk Services Practice in Honolulu, HI.  Carey has over fourteen years of consulting and audit experience in the areas of internal control, risk management, governance, and IT controls.  Her experience includes leading internal audit functions in the performance of operational and IT audits, including audits of the extended enterprise, third party relationships, vendor management, procurement, purchasing and payables, and contracts and billing.  Carey’s IT audit experience includes IT governance, risk management, project management and PMOs, and systems development, as well as general computer controls (information security, change management and operations).
Carey presented at the Institute of Internal Audit’s (IIA) 2008 International Conference, on “Leveraging IT Risk Assessments to Provide Value”.  She also presented at the Information Systems Audit and Control Association’s (ISACA) 2008 and 2007 North American CACS conferences, on the “Benefits of Application Controls Rationalization”.  Carey has also led the development and delivery of national and global training courses for Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Josef Fukano is a Manager for Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Enterprise Risk Services Practice in Honolulu, HI.  Josef has over five years of consulting and audit experience in the areas of internal control, risk management, PMO Audits, and IT controls.  His experience includes leading operational and IT audits, including audits of PMO’s, procurement, purchasing and payables, IT general and application controls.
